EN 511 - Gloves providing protection from cold

Cold fingers can be a safety risk and if you work outdoors or in cold environments, more is required of your work gloves.

If you choose a glove with the EN511 standard, you get a glove certified and approved for protection against cold. The glove must withstand both penetrating cold (convection cooling) and contact cold (direct contact). In both cases, the highest level of protection is 4.

Winter gloves must at least be able to achieve protection level 1 according to EN 388 with regard to wear and tear resistance.

Winter gloves are not required to pass a water penetration test, but they are nevertheless tested according to the following criteria:

  • Penetration of water in less than 30 minutes gives a value = 0
  • Penetration time more than 30 minutes gives a value = 1
